Rare are the bands that possess the necessary prowess to throw down in a “Battle of the Bands”…….even fewer have the 80lbs brass balls to go head to head in one…..um against themselves?. Last night, on June 3rd, local talents Bayside High and Scarecrow Hill clashed in an exhilarating showdown at The New World Tavern, nestled in the heart of downtown Plymouth. For those unacquainted with these bands, it's worth noting that they are comprised of the same talented musicians, albeit showcasing different instruments and musical styles. As the clock struck 9 o'clock, the clash of these local music titans commenced.
IN THIS CORNER:
Taking the stage first was Bayside High, prompting the crowd to eagerly anticipate their performance. Niki Smalls in stature and name, but not stage presence had the crowd jumping within three songs.. Donned in their trademark red and black attire, Bayside High delivered hard rock renditions of beloved 80's and 90's hits, interspersed with original tracks from their latest album, "Banger's Only." A perfect blend of lighthearted amusement and unadulterated roc. Having witnessed Bayside's brilliance numerous times, I can confidently say that they were ablaze last night, prepared to give Scarecrow Hill a run for their money. If you're in search of a band exuding the essence of Alice in Chains, fronted by a fireball of a lead singer, and capable of delivering heavy adaptations of your favorite pop anthems, be sure to keep an eye out for the next Bayside High performance.
AND IN THIS CORNER:
The stage was adorned with a microphone stand straight out of a horror movie set, crafted from an assortment of skulls and demonic faces, offering a glimpse of what was to follow. Enter Scarecrow Hill, comprising the same ensemble of musicians as Bayside High (Tylor, Brenden, Joel, Dom, Nikki, and Joe). However, this time around, Brenden assumed the role of the drummer, Nikki took over the percussions, and Tyler loomed over the crowd from center stage, wielding his mic stand adorned with skulls—an homage to the metal gods. With a repertoire encompassing originals and covers from bands like Slipknot, Scarecrow Hill demonstrated a distinct tonal shift in the nights music. The dedicated fans of S.H., accumulated over the years, were out in full force, ready to immerse themselves in an evening of beer-fueled metal revelry.
THE VICTOR:
Scarecrow Hill emerged as the triumphant force of the night. However, in my humble opinion, declaring an outright winner would be akin to comparing apples and oranges. What transpired on stage can only be described as one of the most exceptional rock shows you'll encounter south of Boston. Whether one perceives these groups as two distinct bands or merely as a single entity with a lineup shuffle, it matters not. If you're seeking a night of unbridled hard rock or metal, rest assured, your expectations will be surpassed.
